US Government Job Report - Heading in the right direction? The data, showing 266,000 new positions were added in April which is quarter of the number analyst were expecting. Does this mean US economy is doing bad? Well, it is always unwise to draw conclusions using any single employment report especially when we have world wide, once in a generation pandemic like COVID. Many people still have fears about public health and with the virus still at high levels, it would not be surprising if some workers will feel safer continuing to draw unemployment benefits due to many reasons such as not finding proper child care or schools are being closed. As more vaccines are distributed, economy continues to open up. Per the analysts, it will be a unique recovery for US economy. Vaccine Update Poll - Recent polls show that, 64% of American adults have gotten or want a Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible, 15% will wait and see and 19% will either definitely not get one or will only get one if it is required. The people who really want a vaccine have been able to get one. Now ideas are pouring in to get those who are hesitating (i.e. the wait and see group) to get their vaccine. Studies show that people, especially younger people, are far more likely to get a vaccine when they know someone else who has gotten one, which is a good news. If professionals can get a single person in a social circle to get a vaccine, it will make their overall job of getting people vaccinated that much easier. Steps taken by the Administration - To ensure transportation is not a barrier, President Joe Biden announced that Uber and Lyft will provide free rides to vaccination sites from May 24th through July 4th. The administration is ramping up vaccination sites with new partnerships with the nation's community colleges, providing on-site vaccination clinics. This will enable people to select vaccination sites near to them. By: Adyoth Sural
U.S troops leaving Afghanistan General Austin Scott Miller, Commander of the U.S Forces in Afghanistan, confirmed that the U.S has begun to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. He said "All of our forces are now preparing to retrograde. Officially the notification date will be the first of May, but at the same time as we start taking local actions we have already begun that." President Joe Biden announced his decision to end the war in Afghanistan earlier this month. There is concern that the withdrawal of troops can cause the Taliban to regain control and cause the Afgani government to collapse. General Frank McKenzie, Commander of U.S central command said “If the Taliban attack, US or any coalition forces, we will have a forceful response if our forces are attacked.” He also stated that the U.S will continue to monitor terrorism. General Miller has spoken with the Taliban Political Commission and he said to them "A return to violence, an effort to force a military decision, would be a tragedy for Afghanistan and the Afghan people." The senior US general responsible for US troops in the Middle East made clear that the U.S will maintain the ability to launch airstrikes on the Taliban. By: Adyoth Sural
Border patrol The Biden administration is facing a problem with immigration. Illegal immigrants are flocking to the American border. The reason people flee to the border is because of things like war, poverty, or political problems. Republicans blame President Joe Biden for softening on the border, while Democrats claim that the previous president’s system left them unprepared. The way President Biden is going to handle this is still unknown. The majority of the illegal immigrant children are accepted but still, a few are being denied. Of the 97,000 illegal immigrants, 70,100 were turned away. This is similar to how the border was operating in the last Presential era, except now, unaccompanied immigrant children are being accepted. 81 billion for school from COVID relief fund On 3/24/21 President Joe Biden said “I'm really proud to announce that starting today, states will begin receiving nearly $130 billion in school funding that we included in the American Rescue Plan. In fact, $81 billion of those dollars will be arriving today to those schools.” The Biden Administration is releasing funding for schools as part of a $1.9 trillion Covid relief package to all of the 50 states including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. President Biden also said “Help is here for schools to purchase PPE, hire additional personnel like nurses, counselors, custodial staff, improve ventilation and sanitation, avoid devastating layoffs and give students extra support.” while talking about the reason for the state funding. He also spoke about funding will help students to make up for lost time and lost learning. He did emphasize the long-term impact on students/kids due to this pandemic and how funding will help in addressing mental health issues. |
